Dr. Kirsten Kennedy maps the geo-cultural heritage of Georgian Bay

July 14, 2023 by Earth Sciences Communications

Dr. Kirsten Kennedy of U of T Scarborough maps the Georgian Bay watershed using a drone with LiDAR (light detection and ranging) technology to highlight the geo-cultural landscape of the area.

The Georgian Bay landscape has a rich history as indigenous people have lived through extreme shifts in the climate. Kennedy's research investigates the interconnections between the indigenous people that resided in this area and the environment through mapping out the landscape of Georgian Bay. The results of this research will be important in planning the Georgian Bay Geopark project

UTSC has built a website that contains modules that provide information about Georgian Bay as well as a virtual field trip to the aspiring geopark, allowing anyone to learn about the amazing geology of the area.
