Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Statement
The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto values equity, diversity and inclusion, and recognizes these as necessary for scientific and pedagogical excellence. We welcome participation of all individuals in departmental activities, regardless of race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, socio-economic status, age, abilities and disabilities, family status, or stage of academic and career journey. Each person brings valuable and unique perspectives, ideas and experiences. There is an urgent need to enhance equity, diversity and inclusion in all the sciences, but this is particularly true of the geosciences where inclusion of racialized, marginalized and excluded groups has lagged. Further, our research activities often take place on the traditional lands of Indigenous peoples of Canada, and of elsewhere, and we are committed to developing respectful and collaborative relationships with Indigenous people. We aspire to excellence in geoscience research, teaching and learning, and to serve the scientific community and society at large, based on principles of reconciliation, equity, diversity and inclusion (REDI). To reach our goals, the department has established a REDI committee, mandated to educate and engage department members on REDI issues, and to promote a welcoming culture of respect and inclusivity in the department.
