Internal Graduate Scholarships

The Department has a number of internal scholarships, which make up part of the students’ funding packages. Students are automatically considered for these scholarships and do not need to apply.

A.T. Griffis Memorial Graduate Scholarship

To be awarded to a full-time graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences on the basis of academic excellence, professional dedication and imagination. Preference may be given to students requiring geology field trips, especially for research involving a significant economic geology component.

Cameron Allen Explorers Graduate Fellowship

To be awarded to one or more graduate students in economic geology and or deposit studies on the basis of academic merit with preference given toward support for international students enrolled in the PhD program in the Department of Earth Sciences. Financial need will be considered.

David & Virginia Moore Graduate Scholarship in Exploration Geology

To be awarded to one or more MSc or PhD students (domestic or international) conducting research in exploration geoscience and other geoscience fields related to resource exploration. The award will be given on the basis of academic merit, with consideration for demonstrated financial need as well.

David Strangway Award in Earth Sciences

To be awarded to outstanding graduate students in the Department of Earth Sciences to assist in the career and professional development of the recipient(s). Candidates should have demonstrable research ability and be in the final stage of study for their Master’s degree or actively pursuing their doctoral thesis research. 

D.H. Gorman Explorers Fund Graduate Scholarship

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered. Preference will be given to students in the area of mineralogy.

Dr. H.O. Seigel Scholarship in Geophyscis

To be awarded to a student successfully completing their PhD who had been studying geophysics and pursuing his/her graduate degree in the Department of Earth Sciences in the Faculty of Arts and Science. To be awarded based on academic merit to a student who had been engaged in research and innovation of new procedures in applied geophysics.

Emeritus University Professor A. J. (Tony) Naldrett Graduate Scholarship Fund

To be awarded to a graduate student(s) in the Department of Earth Sciences carrying out research in the fields of geology, petrology, geochemistry (including experimental) and geophysics applied to economic mineral deposits; and/or mineral exploration/evaluation techniques. Preference will be given to international students enrolled in a PhD program as well as those carrying out research on orthomagmatic ore deposits.

Eric L. Hoffman Memorial Scholarship

Recipients should be PhD students in the Department of Earth Sciences who have demonstrated a sincere interest in geochemistry, and selection should be based on academic merit. Recipients should demonstrate leadership qualities and promise in the field of geology, and should be in the top 10% of their class.

Graduate Student Scholarship / Bursary Fund in honour of Emeritus Professor Steven D. Scott and Joan Scott

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences. Recipients must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need.

H.V. Ellsworth Graduate Fellowship in Mineralogy

Awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences who is pursuing research in the general field of mineralogy.

Hugh Snyder International Scholarship in Earth Sciences

To be awarded on admission to an international graduate student from Latin America (including Mexico and Brazil), Spain or Portugal based on academic merit. The scholarship is renewable in subsequent years provided the student continues their graduate studies in the Department of Earth Sciences and maintains academic standing.

Irene Gale-Rucklidge Explorers Fund Graduate Scholarship

To be awarded to (a) graduate student(s) studying in the field of mineralogy, petrology and/or geochemistry in the Department of Earth Sciences, based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.

James P. Nowlan Explorers Fund Graduate Scholarship

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.

Jeff Fawcett & John Gittins Graduate Explorers Fund

To be awarded as an annual scholarship to one or two graduate students in geology whose research is focused on the application of petrology, mineralogy or field mapping to the study of economic geology and ore deposits, or whose work applies these fields to other sub-disciplines of Department of Earth Sciences.

Laurence and Theresa Curtis Explorers Graduate Fellowship

Awarded to one or two students enrolled in a PhD program in the Department of Earth Sciences on the basis of academic merit with preference given toward support for international students. Financial need will be considered.

Laurence and Theresa Curtis Explorers Graduate Scholarship 

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences based on academic merit. Financial need will be considered.

Margaret Amelia Miller Scholarship

To be awarded on the basis of academic merit to a graduate student enrolled in a program in geology or geophysics. Preference will be given to a student who is conducting the main part of their research at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM), and/or whose primary supervisor is a faculty member fully appointed at UTM.

Nick and Marilyn Tintor Explorers Fund Graduate Scholarship

To be awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.

Dr. Norman Keevil President's Fellowships in Geology

To be awarded to two or more graduate students studying geology at the master’s and/or doctoral level. Recipients are to be students who intend to take their expertise to developing nations upon graduation. Preference will be given to students whose birth place is in a developing nation.

P.C. Finlay Q.C. President's Fellowships in Geology

To be awarded to two or more graduate students studying geology at the master’s and/or doctoral level. Recipients are to be students who intend to take their expertise to developing nations upon graduation. Preference will be given to students whose birth place is in a developing nation.

Richard Bedell Explorers Fund Graduate Scholarship

To be awarded to (a) graduate student(s) in the Department of Earth Sciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered. Preference will be given to international students; and those who conduct research related to mineral exploration.

W.W. Moorhouse Fellowship

To be awarded annually to a graduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences.
