Scholarships
The following is a list of some of the scholarships available to Earth Sciences Undergraduate students. The value of the scholarship awards range from smaller scholarships of several hundred dollars to large awards of several thousand dollars. Some scholarships require an application from the student. Contact the Earth Sciences Department for more information.
The Geology Undergraduate Explorers Fund
Undergraduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences based on academic merit.
Nicholas Wemyss Undergraduate Explorers Fund Award
Undergraduate student in the geosciences based on academic merit.
Daniela and Alexander Tintor Undergraduate Scholarship
Student in the geosciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.
Ed Spooner Undergraduate Scholarship in Mineral Deposits Geology/Exploration
Undergraduate student taking the course ESS 423 (Mineral Deposits) or its future equivalent for credit.
Dr. E. T. Tozer Scholarship in (Triassic) Stratigraphy / Palaeontology
Undergraduate student in the Department of Earth Sciences studying (Triassic) Stratigraphy / Palaeontology, based on academic merit
James P. Nowlan Explorers Fund Undergraduate Scholarship
Student in the geosciences based on academic merit. Financial need will also be considered.
Joseph Michael Housam Memorial Leadership Award
One or two 3rd year undergraduate students enrolled in a major/specialist program in Earth Science who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities and based on academic merit.
NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards

Alexander MacLean Scholarship
Student who has completed GLG 318H1. Students enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also eligible to receive the award.
Coleman Gold Medal in Geology
Graduating student who has completed one of the Specialist programs offered by the Department of Geology. The recipient will also receive the Wesley Tate Scholarship.
Daniel Wilson Scholarships in Science
Award rotates on an annual basis between the Department of Earth Sciences (third year student) and Geography (second or third year student) based on academic merit. There are additional awards for third year students in other science departments.
H.V. Ellsworth Undergraduate Award in Mineralogy
Student in a program offered by the Department of Earth Sciences with demonstrated interest in the general field of mineralogy.
Joubin James Scholarship and Prize
Student in the Geology or Geophysics Specialist program.
Roger E. Deane Memorial Scholarship in Geology
Student who has completed the departmental geological field camp at Whitefish Falls (normally taken during the summer). Students enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering are also eligible to receive the award.
Wesley Tate Scholarship in Geology
Graduating student who has completed one of the Specialist programs offered by the Department of Earth Sciences. The recipient will also receive the Coleman Gold Medal.
Frederick W. Schumacher Scholarship in Geology
Student in the Specialist program in Geology or the Geological Engineering program of the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. The award will alternate on an annual basis between the two Faculties.
Don Salt Scholarship
Student in the Specialist program in Geology, Geology and Physics, or Physics (with a concentration in Geophysics). Apply to the Department of Geology by March 1.
Garnet W. McKee-Lachlan Gilchrist Scholarship
Student enrolled in the Specialist program in Geology and Physics.
Teck Cominco Ltd. Scholarship
A third year student in Geosciences or Materials Science who has demonstrated a sincere interest in the mining, chemical or metallurgical industries. The recipient should show qualities of leadership and engineering promise, be in the upper half of his/her class, and be eligible to work in Canada. The scholarship may be renewed once in fourth year provided that the recipient has achieved satisfactory standing in a full third year program. Apply to the Department of Earth Sciences or the Department of Chemistry by September 30.
