Areas of Interest
Our research is motivated by the need to develop defensible strategies to reduce chemical contaminants in the environment. To accomplish this aim, we strive to identify and connect sources of chemical emissions to the movement of chemicals through systems and ultimately to exposure. We focus on the systems with relatively high levels of contaminants such as indoor environments and outdoor urban systems. Our methods include mathematical modelling, sampling (and developing methods to sample various environments) and analytical chemistry. To make our research relevant, we then connect our findings to policies and legislation.
Biography
Miriam Diamond is a professor at the University of Toronto with a research focus on understanding chemical contaminants from emissions through to human and ecosystem exposure. She is active in promoting sound chemicals management at national to international scales, having been the co-chair of Canada's Chemicals Management Plan Science Committee and Ontario's Toxic Reduction Scientific Expert Panel. She is now a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel of the Global Environmental Facility, a Commissioner of Earth Commission 2.0 hosted by Future Earth and that is part of the Global Commons Alliance, and Vice-Chair of the International Panel on Chemical Pollution, in addition to other national and international activities. She has supervised the research of over 100 individuals from undergraduates to post-doctoral fellows and has published over 250 scientific papers and chapters. Miriam is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
